Hermann Herold

HEROLD, Hermann Herbert – In the companionship of his family, Hermann passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, July 23, 2026 at the age of 95. 

Predeceased by his beloved wife Lorraine (née Cook) (2013). Lovingly missed by his children Brian Herold, and Sandra Sherbinsky (Rob Ceccotti). Cherished Grandpa of Heather Grooms (Eugene), Jessica Herold, Brett Herold (Lindsay); great-grandpa of Melissa, Ella, Jillian, Ross, Lily, Fletcher and Audrey. Survived by his sister-in-law Waltraud Herold; brother-in-law Don Cook (Brenda); nieces and nephew: Lorraine, Sabina (Brian), Ulrika, Keenan and their families.  

Predeceased by his parents Herbert and Alma; siblings Helga (Gust) Scholles, Lothar (Erika) Herold, and Bernd Herold; and nephew Rolf Scholles.  

Hermann was born on January 1, 1931, in Glauchau, East Germany, to Herbert and Alma Herold. After graduating from high school, he left East Germany in 1947 for West Germany, where he completed a three-year apprenticeship at a local dairy and earned his certification as a butter maker.

In 1951, Hermann applied to immigrate to Canada. Although Australia had been his first choice, he had no sponsor there, so Canada became his new home. As part of the immigration requirements, he committed to working on a dairy farm for one year after arriving and repaid a portion of the cost of his passage.

At 21 years of age, Hermann arrived in Montreal on May 19, 1952. He worked on a dairy farm near Hawkesbury, Ontario, earning $30 a month. After completing his year of service and repaying $15 toward his ship's fare, he moved to Toronto in April 1953 with just $93 in savings. After a discouraging job search, he was hired at Acme Farmers Dairy, later Sealtest, where he spent 14 years in the pasteurization department before becoming a foreman.

In 1955, Hermann married the love of his life, Lorraine, and together they purchased their first home in Toronto. They later adopted their son, Brian, in 1960 and their daughter, Sandra, in 1962. Hermann was a proud and devoted father who loved and supported his children throughout their lives. 

In 1965, the family moved to the new community of Bramalea. Hermann enjoyed community life, playing the lead role in the Bramalea Little Theatre production of Annie Get Your Gun, while he and Lorraine formed many lasting friendships with their neighbours.

When the Ontario Milk Marketing Board was established in 1967, Hermann joined as an Assistant Marketing Officer. His work included improving milk transportation routes throughout the province, and he also played an active role in coordinating the CNE Dairy Princess Competition.

Hermann also had a passion for sailing. In the early 1970s, he and Lorraine purchased a 30-foot sailboat, the Henkel Lily, and spent countless weekends sailing around Centre Island and creating treasured family memories on the water.

In 1977, Hermann accepted the position of Fieldman for Grey and Wellington Counties, prompting the family's move to Mount Forest. He often said the best part of his job was working with the producers. Their home became a gathering place for family, with countless happy memories made around the pool and dinner table, especially at Christmas and Thanksgiving.

Following his retirement in 1992, Hermann and Lorraine moved to a condominium on Birmingham Street, where they enjoyed many wonderful years with friends. Mount Forest remained their home for nearly 50 years.

Hermann and Lorraine were faithful members of the United Church, where Hermann sang in the choir for many years. He was an avid Blue Jays and Maple Leafs fan, often seen around town proudly wearing his teams' colours. He also enjoyed golfing at the Mount Forest Golf Club and celebrated a hole-in-one at Homestead Golf Club in 1997.

A dedicated volunteer, Hermann gave generously of his time to the local food bank, Meals on Wheels, and Cancer Patient Services.

After Lorraine's passing in 2013, Hermann often reflected on the wonderful life they shared, including memorable trips to Germany, Hawaii, Alaska, and their favourite destination, Barbados.

Hermann loved Canada and was proud to become a Canadian citizen. He lived a full and happy life, finding joy in his family, his grandchildren, travelling, golfing, sailing, acting, singing, and bowling.

Hermann passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side, watching his beloved Toronto Blue Jays. Those who knew him will often remember him singing My Way by Frank Sinatra—a fitting tribute to a man who truly lived life his way until the very end.

We are also grateful to the many neighbours, church members, and friends who kept in touch with Dad, whether through a visit, a phone call, or by dropping off freshly baked treats and home-cooked meals. A heartfelt thank you to Sharon for calling Dad every morning at 8:00 a.m. for the past several years to make sure he was doing well. We are also grateful to Dad's neighbour, Jim, whose friendship meant so much to him and who generously drove him wherever he needed to go during the last few years of his life. To each of you, from our family and our children, thank you. Your kindness, friendship, and support will always be remembered with deep gratitude.

The memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, 116 Fergus Street North, Mount Forest, on Thursday, July 30^th at 1:00 p.m., with visitation at the church from 12:00-12:45 p.m. Immediately following, all are invited to the church hall for refreshments and fellowship. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Louise Marshall Hospital Foundation or Cancer Patient Services.
