Douglas Lorne McLellan
McLELLAN, Douglas Lorne - It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected death of Doug at St. Mary’s Hospital in Kitchener on Sunday, December 27, 2020 at 68 years young.  Loving husband of Diane (Strangway) for 41 years.  Doug was the proud father of Michael (Meghan).  He adored and cherished his grandchildren Kaiden and Quinn Grace.  Doug is survived by his sisters Edith (Grant) Fotheringham, Wendy (Jeff) Smeltzer and Betty McLellan, and sister-in-law Donna (Glen) Dougan.  Predeceased by his parents Wilbert and Agnes (Ivel), parents-in-law Cliff and Alice (Charlick) Strangway, and brother-in-law John and Janie (Bartley) Strangway. Fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews and friends.  Doug was a gifted Salesman for MDL Doors and always enjoyed talking to his clients.  He was devoted to his community serving on Council for the former Arthur Township for four years and also as Reeve for two years.  Doug sat on the Wellington County Land Division committee for several years and was co-chair on the committee to build the new Sports Complex in Mount Forest.  Doug coached baseball and hockey when his son played.  He also coached the Senior Girls Hockey Team winning Gold in the Walter Gretzky tournament and the OWHA ‘C’ Championship.  He loved going to Home Hardware shows, playing euchre with the seniors and Shuffleboard.  He knew how to have fun!  Cremation has taken place.  Due to Covid-19, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  As expressions of sympathy, donations can be made to the Louise Marshall Hospital Foundation or Cancer Patient Services.  Arrangements entrusted to the England Funeral Home, Mount Forest.

Condolences

Diane, Michael & Family – My deepest sympathies go to you. As the many notes of condolence show, Doug was a man of humor, family, and community. We all had so much fun with him – at meetings, get-togethers or just talking over the back fence. But Doug was also much more than that: he was the guy you wanted in your corner when the challenge was the greatest. Our little Township of Arthur was under siege in March of 1989, and I will never forget Doug’s contribution of long hours of work (and persuasive lobbying) that summer, and his indefatigable spirit. He carried a lot of us, who were by then so tired, across the finish line. RIP big guy – the farmland in heaven is now in good hands. TM

— Sue DeBartolo, January 7, 2021

I had the pleasure to sit on the Township of Wellington North recreation committee with Doug. Doug was a straight shooter and was always willing to tell you the way it was. He was a cornerstone of the community and will be missed. There will be angels playing euchre with Doug.

Dear Diane, Michael and family, My condolences and I am so sorry for your loss. May God give you strength today and in the days ahead. Doug always knew how to bring a smile and depth to any conversation. There was no one exactly like him, a kind loving man with a great heart. As I pondered the sad news many fond memories of working with Doug flooded over me. Here are a few of them. Many years ago two young men met by what seemed to be by design and not merely by chance. Both ambitious and not completely settled in our current jobs dreaming of what could be. We may never know for certain yet possibly this may have what brought us together. Doug’s vision for what could be accomplished if he could get a job with MDL Doors and it’s founders vision blended and changed the company and the fenestration industry. Doug’s dedication brought great success to all at MDL. I am and have been one of the many whose lives have been touched by this amazing man. Respect, dedication and care for his family, friends, customers and employer to name a few. Going down memory lane brought back many great memories of our days working together. Rest In Peace Doug Mervin Lichty

Doug was a great person. I knew him as a salesperson for MDL Doors, however he was so much more than an ordinary salesperson. Likely over 25 years during my time at Switzer Tim-br Mart in Orillia, Stewart Tim-br Mart in Mount Forest and Elmvale Home Building Centre in Elmvale. Always enjoyed chatting with him, and seeing him at all the buying shows. I will miss him.
